David Corey Lab
In 2017, Usher 1F Collaborative held its first scientific conference in Boston, and opened it up to the Harvard community. David Corey, PhD, the Bertarelli Professor of Translational Medicine in the Blavatnik Institute at Harvard Medical School attended. He brought a strong knowledge base about protocadherin 15 (PCDH15), the Usher 1F gene. After meeting the Chaikof family, specifically Jessica and Rachel who live with Usher 1F, Dr. Corey was inspired to use his knowledge to find a treatment for Usher 1F patients.
Dr. Corey brought on board a lab ophthalmologist, Maryna Ivanchenko, MD, PhD, to dedicate one hundred percent of her time to seeking a gene therapy treatment for Usher 1F. Their success has been exciting and well documented in scientific publications.
Harvard recently published an article with an accompanying video that sums up their work perfectly. Please take a few minutes to read it here.
Our relationship with Dr. Corey exemplifies patient-centered research. Always at the heart of the Collaborative’s decisions are the individuals who live with Usher 1F. The next part of our series will be an essay by our Usher 1F Ambassador, Dorie Shapiro.
