The Laurie and Gary Shapiro Memorial Fund was created to honor the Shapiros' legacy of tirelessly supporting Usher 1F and its goal to end this horrific disease. Indeed, in 2003, when Laurie and Gary Shapiro learned that their daughter, Dorie, had Usher 1F, they became determined to help their daughter and countless others find a cure. Tragically, Dorie and her brother David lost their beloved parents far too young.
Despite this unimaginable loss, Dorie and David have sustained the hard work that their parents started. Dorie has joined the Usher 1F Board of Directors. And, most recently, Dorie and David founded the Laurie and Gary Shapiro Memorial Fund to raise money that will exclusively be used to fund a cure for Usher 1F. Dorie and David are humbled by the generosity of family, friends, colleagues, neighbors and countless others who continue to generously give Tzedakah (justice through philanthropy and giving) to this important cause.
Our current fundraising campaign, Seeing Forward: The Case for Restoring Vision, supported by the Shapiro Memorial Fund, is a bold initiative designed to accelerate research and advance to clinical trials. The campaign's mission is to restore vision for those affected by Usher 1F, offering hope and tangible progress. Each donation brings us closer to a future where a cure is within reach, making a profound impact on families like the Shapiros and countless others.
The Shapiros' legacy endures through the generosity of a committed community, helping to drive the mission forward and bring us closer to a cure.
